New house for family of 18

Gogo Nonkosi Makhaye could not contain her excitement when she received the keys to her new house. She said the lives of her 18-member family has forever been changed. She is pictured with ward 104 Councillor Sizwe Ndlovu. Gogo Makhaye received the house as part of the ongoing R293 project.

A leaking roof of a two roomed house with unstable back rooms served as the home for 18 members of the Makhaye family, stripping them off their dignity. But this is all in the past following the completion of their brand-new home under the R293 project. It was all smiles as the family received the keys to their new home.

Gogo Nonkosi Makhaye said they will sleep a little better knowing they are safe. “We no longer have to worry every time there are strong winds or rain because of the state of the house. Our old home was in a bad state, it had holes in the house large enough to see people passing outside,” she said. Ward 104 Councillor Sizwe Ndlovu said the indignity suffered by the family was unimaginable. “There are many families in my ward living under similar conditions and they will too receive a house.” Councillor Ndlovu called on the community to be patient while the R293 project and other housing projects are being rolled out. “We know that some residents have been waiting to get decent housing. We
are doing our best to fast track this process,” he said. Houses will will be fitted with all the necessary facilities such as water and electricity.
