Learners head to Germany for cultural experience

Eleven high school learners are excited to visit Germany

ELEVEN learners from various high schools will be heading off to Germany to explore the country’s art and cultural activities. The selected learners participated in the Municipality’s Passbook Competition. The learners could not contain their excitement when their names were announced at a prizegiving ceremony on 20 September.

The competition was hosted in partnership with the International and Governance Relations Unit, Kcap, Arrow SA, and Mel Arts and Heritage to teach the youth about the history of the country. Nontando Khanyile, one of the students selected to visit Germany, thanked the Municipality for the opportunity. “I participated in this competition not knowing I will be among the learners going to Germany,” she said.

The Passbook Competition programme is the brainchild of the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Unit. The unit creatively adapted the passbook (dompas) to be used for the competition. Senior Curator in the PRC Unit Mohau Qalaza said the concept of the competition can be traced back to the historic ‘passbook’. “Black South Africans were compelled to carry a passbook known as the ‘dompass’, when they were in certain areas classifi ed as white,” she said.
